The hard sell

If you are creatively minded, have just finished university here’s your chance for a lucky break into advertising!

The hundreds of thousands of jobless creative graduates are probably too young to remember the catchphrase from Alan Bleasdale’s 1980s ‘Boys From the Black Stuff’, ‘Gissa job mate?” Will Self isn’t though. Then it was the call of jobless Liverpudlian laborers. Now, as Will says, it can be heard from the mouths of talented young creatives up and down the country.

With the 2010 Emergency Budget this week, we’d like to send a clear message to Mr Cameron that creatives are worth employing; advertising is not as he has described it, ‘a waste’; and it’s creativity not cuts that will fix what he calls ‘Broken Britain’.

Which is where you, a job and our national talent search come in.

We’re running a 72 hour talent search across Britain to find the creative grad most likely to succeed in convincing the Prime Minister that “Creatives create value not waste!”

YOUR CHALLENGE: POST A VIDEO TO OUR WALL, STARTING, “Dear Mr Cameron …” AND TELL HIM WHY YOU SHOULD BE GIVEN A JOB AS A CREATIVE IN 2010.

Responding to the challenge is easy:

2. Then attach your video (or photo if you’re doing a poster or T-shirt) to your wall post using the video or photo icon

Perhaps you’ll put a well considered argument to camera or read a letter you’ve written him. Maybe you’ll show us a poster you’ve made or create a quick animation. Or maybe, just maybe, you’ll perform an impromptu song composed just for him. Whatever you create, tell him how your creativity can change people’s lives, businesses and communities … but do it BY 5PM TONIGHT, Fri 25 June!

Proximity’s ‘social media geek’ Nicolas Moerman stole this from Delaportos and I’ve duly stolen it from him.  It’s a good example of how the virtual world can become part of our real world.  Only criticism is that this isn’t an easily scalable idea, and the Account Director in me imagines it would have been a nightmare to arrange – so hats off to the account team, production and media people that made this idea happen for the creatives.  You may have got very little recognition, but I appreciate the blood and guts you put in to make this idea happen!
