A-List

In homage to The Campaign Magazine A List  I have created ‘The T List’, a Twitter List of the top twitterati.

You can follow it here, I’d also be keen to know who you think I should add (or remove!)?

Twonline Display, Banners that let you Tweet.

Interesting new development, spotted over at Blogads, a banner that lets users Tweet within the display space (the fully functional versions are running on the DailyKos site).  The creative execution is not saying much, but it has potential to be used in an interesting way.  Let’s see…

Prescott: The North South divide

October 14, 2009 nick0myers Leave a comment

Watched an interesting documentary tonight on BBC2 with John & Pauline Prescott exploring the divide between the North and South of England (watch on iPlayer).    There was an interesting argument about whether we should create more jobs up North, or should everyone in the North who wants a better job move South.  John Prescott was in favour of economic regeneration to make the Northern cities such as Newcastle on a par with the Home Counties.  In my heart I agree with this view.  But, my rational head tells me it’d be better for people to move South. I think the level of regeneration (and cultural shift) needed would be massive.  Many industries are hard wired to doing business in the South.  However, if economic regeneration did take off there’d be much more opportunities for Regional agencies.  In fact, maybe I could then move out of London and get a much bigger house in the North? Hmm…

What I came away from the documentary thinking was: -

  • Art critic Brian Sewell is a horrible, horrible, man.  He is arrogant, rude and condescending.  I’d rather be a Brumie than Brian any day of the week.
  • The divide between have and have not’s in our country is shocking, and we ought to be doing more to tackle the levels of poverty, illiteracy and unemployment – it is not good.  The “have’s and have yachts” need to do more to help the “have not’s”.
  • Mixed feelings in the house about John Prescott, but I warmed to him.

Rory Sutherland Talks to TED

Rory Sutherland’s TED Talk, given in July 2009 (just went up today), very entertaining.  Worth a watch.

His argument is:  -

Advertising = Better Product Perceptions = Increased Value = Good.

For those who don’t know Rory is Chairman of Ogilvy and also President of the IPA (he’s the first agency man from a Direct Marketing background to hold that role).

The most impressive business card I’ve seen, it’s mine!

This video is so funny, thanks to No Man Can Serve Two Masters for sharing.

I’ll soon be getting some new business cards myself from Moo.com, a fantastic site that let’s you design your own bespoke business cards (or mini-cards if you fancy).  Fell in love with these after being handed some by @katylindemann and @priyanka.

Why the Meerkat isn’t a great “social media campaign”

Amelia at VCCP argued a strong case for the eradication of the phrase “social media campaign”, to be replaced with the more technically correct “social campaign”.  As she managed to effectively stop me saying “social media campaign” ever again, I thought it’d be good to share with you the slides from her presentation at IPA Social.

If you missed IPA Social last week you should read Robin’s post over on the We Are Social blog, he’s included lots of links to other blogs on the subject, including my summary of Which Agency is best for Social Media (posted on the @Proximity blog).

Gary’s Amazing Social Media Counter

Check out Gary’s Social Media Count for a running tally of all the blogs, tweets, Facebook users, amount spent online globally and a host of other live social media data.  I wasn’t able to embedd the flash movie he’s created within WordPress.com, but I’d recommend taking a look at it.

Would you have ignored this man? An interesting social experiment from The Washington Post

October 12, 2009 nick0myers Leave a comment

@PaulaJHolben sent me a link to the below social experiment run by The Washington Post (via TwitPic).  Just goes to show how important location is.  Implication for those of us in agency land?  Being located outside of London could affect how client companies percieve you i.e. you’ll be seen as a cheaper alternative, but maybe not the most “creative” agency on the roster.
